GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 13
eveningsout BIG FUN
20 years to life
WELLSPRING MEDIA
Independent film wunderkind Jonathan Caouette began documenting his life at age 11. A confused gay boy in a troubled family, Caouette had plenty of grist for his cinematic autobiography. He captured his sadistic grandparents, serial drug overdoses and the shock therapy his schizophrenic mother received,
The film of his life thus far, Tarnation, will play this weekend at the Wexner Center for the Arts.
Tarnation draws on over 160 hours of footage, answering machine messages and family photo albums. Riveting and compelling, the film is a two-decade odyssey through a troubled life that ends with hope, sanity and peace.
At 31 Caouette has found his peace by moving to New York and through his mate David Paz. Two other queer cinematic legends, Gus Van Sant (My Own Private Idaho) and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) decided to sign on as executive producers when they saw a rough cut.
Don't miss a chance to see the film and meet the filmmaker, who will introduce the screenings in the film and video theater at the Wexner, 1871 North High in Columbus, on February 4 and 5 at 7 pm. Tickets are $6, $4 for members, students and seniors. Call 614292 3535 or go to www.wexarts.org.
The indie rock band Low, prominently featured on the Tarnation soundtrack, will perform at the Wexner Center on Thursday, February 10.
